The use of essential oils in the practice of Aromatherapy is both an art and a science. Aromatherapy began centuries ago, before modern-day medicine and science ever existed. And it worked. This natural method of healing the body is still as true today as it was before. Much like knowing what medications to take for different conditions, and which not to take together, it’s important to know what essential oils work in combination with each other to help deliver the optimum benefit.
How are oils derived?
Essential oils are found in the leaves, bark, roots, fruit and seeds of plants. The most common method of extraction is the distillation process. During this process, steam is passed through the plant matter. As the steam cools and returns to the water, the essential oils rise to the surface and settle atop the water. The oils are then carefully separated from the water.
Essential oils are highly concentrated oils that have a strong aroma. Concentrating these oils means that you are literally separating the most powerful healing compounds of a plant into a single oil. For instance, 60,000 rose petals are required to make 1 ounce of rose oil. (The Chemistry of Essential Oils and Artificial Perfumes, 1921).
With more than 90 essential oils, each oil has its own unique properties, chemical makeup and benefits. There are millions of different blends that can be created by combining oils to build just the right formula.
